Instagram To Launch A Video Editing App Amidst Rival’s Ban

January 20, 2025 – Instagram Head Adam Mosseri has introduced a new video editing software called ‘Edits’.
Despite the turmoil surrounding the banning of TikTok and other ByteDance related apps, Instagram sees this as an opportunity to introduce its own curated version of CapCut.
“There’s a lot going on right now, but no matter what happens it’s our job to provide the best possible tools for creators,” said Adam Mosseri.
Edits: Video Maker
The platform is set to launch in the next month of February for iOS users, with an android version to follow soon after.
Edits aim to target those who love editing short videos through their smartphones. Users are able to edit according to their liking and share the contents on Instagram, as well as monitoring their Instagram Reels analytics.
“It’s definitely not for those who use desktop apps or looking for templates.”

Advanced Features
Edits is designed to support video creations up to 10 minutes long in 1080p resolution.
In addition to basic filters and stickers, the app will offer advanced editing tools, including AI-powered animation, auto-generated captions, and various overlay effects such as text, sound, and voice effects.
While the first version of Edits is not fully complete, Mosseri assured the audience that future updates would bring even more improvements.
How is it different from CapCut?
Following the TikTok ban, which has caused a stir in the online community, CapCut became unavailable last Sunday due to its ownership by ByteDance.
Edits is set to rival CapCut by offering a strong mix of easy-to-use features and advanced editing tools. While CapCut has been popular among TikTok users, Edits brings similar capabilities, with added features that gives creators more flexibility.

“I think it will end up different than CapCut. Edits will have a much more broader range of creative tools, with smaller adressable audience.”
The Future Of Video Editing
With CapCut becoming unavailable due to the TikTok ban, Edits provides a timely alternative, offering an appealing solution for those in need of a new video editing app.
The promise of future updates and improvements strengthens its position as a serious competitor in the market.
Edits are now available for pre-order on the apple store.
