No More Free Tolls To Be Granted During Festive Season

January 21, 2025 – The government has officially declared the discontinuation of toll exemptions for highways across Malaysia during the season of festivals.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi informed that the cabinet is working towards a more targeted approach starting this year. This formed decision aligns with the government’s shift towards implementing targeted subsidies.

However, he emphasized that an announcement will be made in case of any reconsiderations regarding the matter. For the time being, 2024 was the last year for Malaysians to enjoy free tolls.

The government is expected to introduce a more targeted approach for Malaysians following the end festive toll exemptions.

To be transparent, it was never an obligation for the government to provide free tolls for highway users. However, it was a thoughtful movement as the country’s financial condition permits.

On the hindsight, this matter also contributed to a heavier traffic as cars make the best of the free toll offer, making the route to hometowns more congested.
