US – China Logistics Affected Over Tariff Disputes

WASHINGTON, February 5, 2025 – The U.S. Postal Service has temporarily suspended the arrival of parcels from China following a tariff dispute over the weekend.

However, letter packages will remain unaffected during this suspension. The US Postal Service has not yet announced when the suspension will end. This move follows President Trump’s order for an additional 10 percent tariff on Chinese imports, which took effect on Tuesday. – AFP

Who Is Behind This?

The U.S. Postal Service declined to address questions regarding President Trump’s involvement in this ongoing situation, particularly following his statement about ending the “de minimis” shipments from China and other countries.

The “de minimis” exemption allows goods valued at $800 or less to enter the U.S. without being subject to duties or taxes. However, this exemption has come under scrutiny due to the growing number of shipments taking advantage of it. U.S. officials have cited the rapid rise of Chinese online retailers like Shein and Temu as a key factor behind the increase. As a result, the suspension could lead to delays for parcels from these companies.

The U.S. government has been exploring ways to tighten the rule, expressing concerns that the surge in shipments is making it harder to screen forsecurity risks.

While the U.S. Postal Service did not provide a specific reason for the suspension, other retailers, including Amazon, may also be impacted.
