Surge Of Influenza, Travelling Malaysians Advised For Flu Shots

KUALA LUMPUR February 7, 2025 – A spike in Influenza cases across countries including China, Japan and Taiwan has become alarming.

Flu cases has reached a new high in Japan, recording about 9.5 million seasonal flu infections up from September 2, 2024 to January 26 this year. This surge of cases were primarily driven by the spread of Influenza A, though there are visible ongoing concerns regarding Influenza B outbreaks.

In Japan, densely populated areas like Tokyo, Hokkaido, Osaka, and Fukuoka— each drawing significant tourist traffic are seeing a surge in infection cases. The need for a flu vaccine shot becomes a necessity, in order to prevent the spreading of this infectious virus.

The Sun reports that a Malaysian traveler’s vacation in Japan turned horrifying when she faced RM15,000 daily hospital costs after contracting the flu, which later led to a pneumonia diagnosis. In fear of not being able to afford the fees, she and her family decided to return home.

Common Symptoms

How to know if you are infected with Influenza A? Some common visible symptoms when contracting the disease include:

  • Sore Throat
  • Runny, Stuffy Nose
  • Fever or Body Chills
  • Body Aches
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Shortness Of Breath
  • Nausea, Diarrhea

As a consequence, Malaysian Travelers are strongly advised to get a flu shot before heading abroad, especially for countries like Japan where hospital costs can be unreasonably high. Flu vaccination can reduce the risk of severe illness, and avoid unexpected financial or health emergencies while travelling. Malaysia will also be protected from the spread of such virus upon their return.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that everyone aged 6 months and older should receive a flu vaccine each season, especially those at higher risk of serious complications from influenza.
