Genting Leadership Transition: Tan Kong Han Appointed New CEO

Kuala Lumpur, February 28, 2025, Genting Berhad has announced a significant leadership change effective March 1, 2025. Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay will step down as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) after nearly two decades at the helm, transitioning to the role of Executive Chairman. Succeeding him as CEO is Datuk Seri Tan Kong Han, the company’s long-serving President and Chief Operating Officer (COO).

A Legacy of Genting Leadership
Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay, aged 73, has been a pivotal figure in the group’s expansion and diversification. He was appointed as a Director of Genting Berhad on August 17, 1976, and assumed the role of Chairman and Chief Executive on July 1, 2007. Under his stewardship, the company evolved from its Malaysian roots into a global conglomerate with ventures spanning leisure and hospitality, plantations, power generation, oil and gas, property development, and biotechnology. His visionary leadership has been instrumental in positioning Genting as a prominent player on the international stage.

Datuk Seri Tan Kong Han – New Genting CEO
Datuk Seri Tan Kong Han, aged 59, brings a wealth of experience to his new role as CEO. He holds a Master of Arts from the University of Cambridge and has been called to both the English Bar (Lincoln’s Inn) and the Malaysian Bar. Before joining the group, Tan amassed over 13 years of experience in investment banking and served as Group Chief Operating Officer at Tanjong Public Limited Company from 2003 to 2007. He joined Genting Berhad in 2007 as President and COO and was appointed as an Executive Director on January 1, 2020. Throughout his 18-year tenure, Tan has been integral to overseeing Genting Group’s global operations and strategic initiatives.
Market Implications and Future Outlook
The leadership transition is part of Genting’s strategic succession planning, aiming to ensure continuity and sustained growth. Analysts anticipate that Tan’s appointment may influence investor sentiment and potentially impact the share price in the short term. However, his extensive experience and deep understanding of the company’s operations are expected to reassure stakeholders of it’s stable trajectory.
The broader market will closely monitor how this leadership change affects Genting’s strategic direction, especially in its core sectors of leisure, hospitality, and gaming. Given the company’s significant presence in these industries, any strategic shifts could have ripple effects across the market.

As Executive Chairman, Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay will continue to provide strategic oversight, while Datuk Seri Tan Kong Han will focus on operational leadership. This collaborative dynamic is poised to steer the group toward continued success and innovation in the global arena.
