Fast-Track to ASEAN: Malaysia Leads Push for Timor-Leste’s Full Membership

KUALA LUMPUR, 3 March 2025Malaysia has formally requested ASEAN to ease membership criteria for Timor-Leste, expediting the nation’s process to become a full ASEAN member by the end of this year. The proposal was put forward by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, reinforcing Malaysia’s commitment to supporting Timor-Leste’s economic and diplomatic integration into the regional bloc.

During the latest ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, Malaysia emphasized the need for a more flexible approach in assessing Timor-Leste’s progress toward fulfilling the membership roadmap.

“Timor-Leste has demonstrated significant commitment to our principles and objectives. It is in the region’s best interest to facilitate its accession as soon as possible,” said Mohamad Hasan.
