KUALA LUMPUR, March 17 – National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang condemned the incident where a non-Muslim was scolded and slapped while eating at a convenience store in a shopping mall during Ramadan, calling it a provocative act that disrupts the unity and harmony of Malaysia’s multicultural society.

The video spiraled across Social Media after being shared by the victim on his X account.

The minister stressed that such disrespectful actions are unacceptable in a country that upholds the principles of Rukun Negara.

National unity in Malaysia must always be safeguarded, with any threats to the country’s harmony being taken seriously. The authorities emphasize that any incident jeopardizing Malaysia’s peaceful coexistence, particularly those involving racial or religious discord, should not be tolerated.

The Public Attention

In a recent event that raised concerns about social harmony, a man allegedly slapped a victim, Elijah, after a brief exchange regarding his religion. Elijah, who is not Muslim, was reportedly scolded by the assailant, who demanded to see his identity card as proof of his claim. Following this confrontation, the man’s son intervened, trying to de-escalate the situation and offering an apology on behalf of his father.

Aaron, a representative addressing the situation, stated that the victim, Elijah, had already filed a report at the Tampoi Police Station. According to Aaron, the police would be investigating the case under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which addresses voluntary hurt.

The authorities have called for full cooperation from all involved parties. Aaron also urged that the investigation be left in the hands of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to ensure that proper legal procedures are followed.

Elijah shared his side of the story through a tweet on his X account (@bingbinge656), shedding light on the events leading up to the incident. He explained that after being scolded by the man, he clarified that he was not Muslim, which led to the demand for his identity card before the alleged assault took place. Elijah noted that the situation was somewhat diffused when the man’s son approached him to apologize for his father’s actions.

As the investigation continues, the authorities stress the importance of upholding national unity, emphasizing that progress in the country can only be achieved through mutual respect, peace, and understanding among all communities.
