PUTRAJAYA, 25 March 2025 – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Wisma Putra) has officially denied recent claims that eight countries have imposed new visa or travel restrictions on Malaysian citizens, stating that such claims are entirely false and misleading.

In a statement issued today, the Ministry clarified that there have been no changes to the visa policies affecting Malaysians travelling to the countries mentioned in a widely circulated video on a video-sharing platform. The video, which went viral over the weekend, alleged that new travel restrictions had quietly come into effect, sparking confusion and concern among social media users.

“At present, there have been no changes to the visa policies affecting Malaysian travellers in the countries mentioned,” the Ministry affirmed.

Ministry Lodges Police Report, Refers Case to MCMC

The Ministry revealed it has taken firm action in response to the spread of misinformation. A police report has been lodged, and the video has been referred to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for further investigation under existing laws.

This follows increasing public concern over the ease with which misleading content spreads online, particularly regarding international travel—a subject that directly impacts national reputation, bilateral ties, and public confidence.

“The Ministry urges the public to avoid sharing unverified information and to always refer to official sources for accurate and up-to-date travel information,” the statement continued.

Call for Vigilance and Digital Responsibility

This incident highlights a growing challenge faced by governments in the digital era: the amplification of false narratives via social media. With travel being a sensitive and frequently updated topic, Malaysian citizens are advised to consult official websites, embassies, or consular channels before acting on or sharing travel-related news.

The Ministry reiterated its commitment to protecting the rights of Malaysian travelers abroad and ensuring the public remains well-informed and secure.

“The Ministry remains committed to ensuring that Malaysians are well-informed and protected while travelling abroad,” the statement concluded.

Don’t Share, Verify First

As Malaysia continues to play a prominent role on the ASEAN stage and hosts international summits throughout 2025, maintaining accurate public information is more important than ever. Wisma Putra’s swift response reflects its firm stance against disinformation and public anxiety driven by baseless claims.
