Japan Imperial Family Launch YouTube Channel Today

TOKYO, 28 March 2025 – In a landmark move signaling the modernization of Japan revered monarchy, the Imperial Household Agency has announced the launch of its official YouTube channel, set to go live on 1 April 2025.
The channel, named “宮内庁 Imperial Household Agency”, with the handle @Imperial_Household_Agency_jp, will provide unprecedented digital access to the day-to-day engagements of Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako, and other members of the imperial family.

This initiative follows the agency’s successful entry into social media through Instagram in 2024, which garnered nearly 2 million followers and marked the first time in history that Japan’s imperial family had opened its gates to digital communication.
“This effort aims to bring the activities of the Imperial Family closer to the people in a transparent, accessible manner,” an agency spokesperson said.
The YouTube channel will initially feature long-form content, including:
- Official ceremonies and diplomatic receptions,
- Highlights from national celebrations,
- Press addresses such as Emperor Naruhito’s birthday speech,
- Public appearances involving Empress Masako and Princess Aiko.

To maintain the solemnity and decorum traditionally associated with the monarchy, comments will be disabled, but viewers can share feedback through official communication channels on the agency’s website.
Significance and Soft Power Diplomacy
The move signals Japan’s growing efforts to humanize and modernize its imperial institution—often seen as stoic and distant. It also reflects a broader trend in Asia where traditional institutions are rebranding themselves through digital transparency and soft diplomacy.
In a regional context, the launch may inspire other royal families and heritage institutions—including Malaysia’s monarchy—to explore more proactive engagement strategies with their people.
The official YouTube channel is expected to begin uploading content at 10:00 AM JST on launch day.
