A Serendipitous Evening at Le Cercle Sportif de Hue

My journey through Le Cercle Sportif de Huế had already been filled with awe—visiting centuries-old temples, royal tombs, and tracing the stories of emperors past. As the sun dipped low over the Perfume River, painting the sky in soft hues of amber and rose, I crossed one of the city’s many bridges, tired but content.

That’s when I saw it. A striking white building stood gracefully by the riverside, its smooth lines and subtle curves echoing a bygone era of French elegance. There was something unmistakably refined about its architecture—Streamline Moderne, I later learned—a rare sight in Vietnam. I couldn’t take my eyes off it. It looked exquisite. Luxurious. I made a mental note: I need to find out what that building is.

That evening, I had a dinner reservation at a place called Le Cercle Sportif Huế. I hadn’t looked up the location—just trusted my driver to get me there. Imagine my surprise when we pulled up to that very building. I was ecstatic.

Originally established in 1935, Cercle Sportif de Huế was designed as both a sports and social club for French colonial officials and Huế’s elite. It was co-designed by the celebrated French architect Jacques Alphée Lagisquet and Vietnamese architect Hồ Đắc Cáo, standing today as one of the most elegant examples of Art Deco in Vietnam’s ancient capital.

Now operating as a restaurant, Le Cercle Sportif offers an elegant and cozy atmosphere, with decor that blends old-world charm and modern sophistication. The ambiance is intimate and romantic—perfect for a special night out.

What stood out most to me was the menu: a beautiful fusion of local Vietnamese flavors with a Western twist. Every dish was thoughtfully prepared and presented. We were lucky to be seated at a table with a view of the Perfume River, glittering under the city lights. It was magical.

For those looking for a more relaxed experience, there’s a rooftop bar that serves cocktails and light bites. It’s airy, inviting, and the view of the river from up there is just as captivating.

If you ever find yourself in Huế and spot a sleek white building by the riverside, don’t just admire it from afar. Step inside and experience Le Cercle Sportif for yourself—a perfect blend of history, architecture, and culinary delight.
