KUALA LUMPUR 27 January – Malaysian badminton stars Wei Chong and Kai Wun etched their names in history as they clinched the country’s first-ever title at the prestigious Indonesia Masters on January 27, 2025.

The men’s doubles pair delivered an electrifying performance in the final, overcoming Indonesia’s top-seeded duo in a three-set thriller with scores of 21-18, 14-21, 21-16. The match, held at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta, saw an ecstatic crowd cheering on both teams, with Malaysian fans in the stands erupting in jubilation at the final point.

The pair’s journey to the championship was no less remarkable. Ranked 12th in the world, Wei Chong and Kai Wun faced stiff competition throughout the tournament. Their victories included wins over higher-seeded pairs from Japan and South Korea, showcasing their determination and skill. The win is especially significant, as it marks a turning point for Malaysia in the international badminton arena, breaking a drought in men’s doubles titles at major tournaments.

“This victory is a testament to their hard work and determination,” said Malaysia’s Youth and Sports Minister, Hannah Yeoh, in a congratulatory statement. “Wei Chong and Kai Wun have made the nation proud, and their success will undoubtedly inspire a new generation of athletes to strive for greatness.”

However, the second set saw the Indonesian pair bounce back, using their home-court advantage and crowd support to dominate with a score of 14-21.

The deciding third set was a battle of nerves. With both teams tied at 16-16, Wei Chong and Kai Wun displayed remarkable composure, scoring five consecutive points to clinch the championship. Their calm demeanor under pressure was praised by fans and analysts alike.
