MCMC Fines ERA RM250,000 and Lifts Suspension Order

KUALA LUMPUR, March 11 – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has chosen to lift the suspension of Maestra Broadcast Sdn Bhd, the operator of Era FM, following a review of the company’s appeal against the suspension notice issued on March 7.
“The decision was made after considering the appeal, the corrective measures taken by the license holder, and a formal apology from those involved,” MCMC stated in a statement.

RM250,000 Fine Imposed on Maestra Broadcast
Maestra Broadcast Sdn. Bhd. has been fined RM250,000 under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 after an offensive video went viral on Era’s TikTok account.
The commission also took into account the impact of a suspension on Melody and Mix FM, as both operate under the same license.
With the approval of the Attorney General’s Chambers, the commission imposed the fine as part of its enforcement measures. Emphasizing its commitment to regulating online content, MCMC reaffirmed its stance against materials that could incite religious tension or threaten Malaysia’s multiracial harmony.
The commission also urged broadcasters and online users to act responsibly, stressing the importance of adhering to national laws while upholding racial and religious unity.
