Ground shakes in Malaysia as Sumatra Quake sends shockwaves

KUALA LUMPUR, March 18 – Shockwaves left Malaysians trembling as Sumatra records a 5.1 earthquake reading on Tuesday morning, 6.22 am.

According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), the quake struck off the west coast of North Sumatra at a depth of 10 kilometers (km) and was centered 41 km east of Sibolga, Indonesia.

Tremors were reportedly felt in several parts of Malaysia, though no immediate damage or casualties were reported.

The quake’s rumbles were experienced across multiple regions including Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Melaka, Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Perak, Penang, Perlis and Kedah.

Nonetheless, authorities have assured that the tremor carries no risk of a tsunami to the country.
