KUALA LUMPUR, 9 April 2025 – Malaysian automotive giant Proton continues to make waves in the nation’s electric vehicle (EV) sector as its flagship EV, the e.MAS 7, holds the top spot as the most popular electric car in Malaysia for the third consecutive month.

According to the latest sales data, 797 units of the e.MAS 7 were delivered in March 2025, bringing the total to over 1,800 units sold in the first quarter alone. This consistent performance underscores growing public confidence in Proton’s EV offerings and the broader momentum of electric mobility in Malaysia.

The Rise of a Homegrown Electric Powerhouse

Launched in late 2024, the e.MAS 7 is the company’s first fully electric vehicle under its new e.MAS lineup. Designed and assembled locally, the EV combines sleek design, competitive pricing, and strong range performance—making it accessible to a broader segment of Malaysian drivers.

Key features include:

  • 500km WLTP-certified range per charge
  • Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS)
  • Localized navigation and infotainment software
  • Fast-charging capability (80% in under 40 minutes)

“This success reflects not just product strength, but a real shift in Malaysian consumer preference toward sustainability,” said Roslan Abdullah, Deputy CEO of Proton.

EV Market Traction in Malaysia

The e.MAS 7 has consistently outperformed foreign EV brands in its segment, driven by its value-for-money proposition, strong after-sales support, and nationwide availability through their expanding EV service network.

Malaysia’s EV adoption is being driven by:

  • Government incentives, including tax exemptions, road tax waivers, and charging infrastructure grants
  • High petrol prices and cost-of-living concerns
  • A younger, tech-savvy demographic embracing green mobility

According to the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA), EV sales in Q1 2025 are up 43% year-on-year, with Proton claiming the largest market share in the sub-RM150,000 segment.

Building the Ecosystem: Charging and Beyond

Proton’s EV strategy extends beyond vehicles. The company is investing in:

  • A national charging station rollout plan, in partnership with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB)
  • Local battery assembly capabilities through collaboration with Geely
  • R&D facilities focused on solid-state battery research and AI-driven mobility

This integrated approach is part of Proton’s roadmap to become a regional EV leader by 2030, aligning with Malaysia’s Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint.

Export Horizons: Driving Southeast Asia’s EV Growth

With the e.MAS 7 now stabilizing its domestic footprint, Proton has hinted at plans to begin exporting to ASEAN markets such as Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam by mid-2026.

Proton’s EV push also supports the government’s broader goals of creating an end-to-end EV ecosystem, from manufacturing and logistics to green energy and data platforms.

A Malaysian EV Success Story in the Making

Proton’s e.MAS 7 has not just delivered in units—it has delivered in confidence, in capability, and in climate-conscious vision.

As Malaysia charges forward toward a greener future, Proton’s rise in the EV space signals that homegrown innovation can thrive in one of the world’s most competitive automotive landscapes.
