50-metre-deep Sinkhole Emerges In Bangkok

BANGKOK, 24/09/2025 — A significant geological incident has occurred in Bangkok’s Dusit district, where a 50-metre-deep sinkhole emerged, resulting in evacuations and traffic disruptions.
Incident Overview
A major road in Bangkok’s Dusit district experienced a collapse on Wednesday morning, leading to the formation of a 50-metre-deep sinkhole near Vajira Hospital. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) reported that the incident occurred around 6.30 am, severely affecting the flow of traffic and disrupting nearby utilities.
Impact and Response
The sinkhole resulted in the subsidence of two electricity poles and the fall of a forklift truck from the Samsen Metropolitan Police Station into the chasm. The BMA issued an evacuation order for residents of nearby flats for safety reasons. “Authorities have begun evacuating patients and residents from the surrounding area for safety reasons,” stated the BMA.
Traffic and Safety Measures
Traffic has been rerouted from Vajira Intersection to Sanghi Intersection due to the collapse, posing a potential danger to commuters. The Metropolitan Electricity Authority dispatched officials to address the situation, ensuring the safety of the area. Local authorities confirmed that no injuries have been reported so far.
Official Inspection
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt visited the site to inspect and assess the situation. The Governor coordinated efforts to address the road subsidence and to mitigate further risk to the public. The incident highlights the need for ongoing infrastructure assessments in urban areas susceptible to such geological events.
