Hungary Election Campaigning and Signature Collection

Candidates and their supporting organizations have launched their election campaigns, with a two-week window to collect the necessary signatures to qualify for the ballot. Each individual candidate must gather at least 500 valid signatures, with a registration deadline set for March 6. Voters also have the opportunity to submit nominations for national lists ahead of the April 12 election, a process that began on February 3, according to the National Election Committee.

Intense Electoral Competition

The upcoming election is anticipated to be one of the closest in two decades, with opinion polls suggesting a tight race between the ruling Fidesz party and the opposition Tisza party. Polls by government-aligned firms like Nézőpont Institute and independent entities such as 21 Research Centre indicate varying leads, underscoring the unpredictability of the election outcome. The Electoral Procedures Act defines campaigning broadly, encompassing activities like posters, direct canvassing, and political advertising.

AI and Misinformation in the Campaign

A significant aspect of this year’s campaign is the use of artificial intelligence-generated content, which has been prominently featured on social media platforms. Pro-government sites have released AI videos portraying opposition figures, including Tisza’s Péter Magyar, in controversial scenarios. Such content has sparked discussion about the role of misinformation, with the Fidesz Facebook page hosting a particularly contentious video warning of war risks if Fidesz is not supported.

Leaders on the Campaign Trail

Prominent figures from both major parties have begun extensive tours of the country. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has been actively involved in rallies, including unannounced appearances, while Péter Magyar of the Tisza party has embarked on a 55-day national tour titled ‘It’s now or never.’ Magyar has been confirmed as Tisza’s list leader and prime ministerial candidate, with campaign events scheduled across various cities.

Hungary Public Concerns and Future Implications

As Hungary approaches its parliamentary elections, the role of AI in spreading misinformation remains a critical issue, with platforms like Facebook facilitating widespread distribution of content without clear disclaimers. Political Capital has highlighted the impact of these campaigns in influencing public opinion. With the election date approaching, both parties are focused on mobilizing their voter bases, and the dynamics of Hungary’s electoral system may significantly influence the final results.
