January 21, 2025 – Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi stated that offering free tolls during festive seasons will not solve congestion issues on tolled highways. Instead, it would only lead to a longer concession period for toll operators.

Zahid who also serves as the Rural and Regional Development Minister explained that the government’s compensation could exceed RM35 billion per day during peak seasons to the toll operators, which lengthens the duration of toll fee collections.
During Rural Business Challenge 2.0 Event, he stated to the reporters:
“Although this does not involve direct cash compensation, the concession period must be extended. This does not solve the congestion issues on tolled highways.”

He further mentioned that the cabinet came to this decision on toll exemptions following a recommendation that was made by Works Minister, Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
Previously, Nanta Linggi announced that the government would stop offering toll exemptions during festive seasons starting this year.
He highlighted that the government are adopting a more targeted approach, aligning with the government’s move towards implementing subsidies.
On the other hand, Zahid Hamidi calls for better trip planning among highway users. He emphasized the need to shift our mindset in expecting offers or ‘gifts’.
“We should plan our trips accordingly, even when such offers are unavailable,” said Zahid Hamidi.
